Carolyn Long for Congress
When Carolyn Long ran for Congress in 2020, it set up a rematch between Long and incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler. Representative Herrera Beutler, who had served in Congress since 2011, had been popular during her tenure — but the results in 2018 showed a crack in that popularity, with Long garnering the highest percentage of votes yet for any of Beutler’s opponents.
2020 was another hard fought election, and while Beutler won, Long yet again had a strong showing. These two consecutive elections indicated that WA-3 had moved from red to purple, and conditions were right for the seat to flip. In 2022, Beutler lost her primary to far-right opponent Joe Kent, who in turn was defeated by democratic candidate Marie Gluesenkamp Pérez.
Mom, the first political ad, is one of my favorites.
