Representative Stephanie Murphy
Representative Stephanie Murphy and her family’s story is one of perseverance and triumph. Born in Ho Chi Minh, her family fled the communist regime in Vietnam when she was only six months old. They escaped by boat, a dangerous proposition that took the lives of thousands in the years following the Vietnam War. Lost and adrift at sea, it was by a miracle that her family was rescued by the United States Navy. That act kindled in Murphy a lifelong belief in the United States and a desire to serve others.
When Stephanie Murphy was first elected to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District in 2016, she became only the second Vietnamese-American ever elected to the House of Representatives, and the first Vietnamese-American woman to serve in the United States Congress. While in office, Congresswoman Murphy was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party. She was the co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, served on the Ways and Means Committee, served on the Armed Services Committee, acted as the Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, and was one of just seven Democrats appointed to the United States House Committee on the January 6 Attack.
